Thinking about benchmarks By Fred Cederholm

I’ve been thinking about benchmarks. Actually I’ve been thinking about the December 2007 trade numbers, the recession, our trade deficits, our energy deficits, a line drawn in the water, and mushrooms. The “official” numbers for our energy imports and our trade deficit(s) for this past December, and the cumulative trade deficit(s) for the calendar year just ended were released last week. There are some real eye openers in the figures. These should be filed away for comparison because 2008 is already shaping up for US/us to be a year of many changes – mostly downward!



You see financial pundits (me included) are looking to the year ahead as a year of downturns. Some have already postulated that the dreaded R-word of recession actually began in the final months of 2007. Others predict its beginnings in the first or second quarter of 2008. Because this is a presidential election year, the government will pull out all the stops to put forth a smiley face during the third quarter before the actual election in November. We’ve heard their mantra of “don’t worry, be happy (and spend)” before. Congress and the Bush Administration already have approved a $150 Billion rebate package giving tax-paying citizenry a spring windfall to soften coming downturns. This means of course, a supplementary bump in our National Debt by the same amount. All coming downturns should be reflected in our consumption of goods and energy. Dollar slide will continue.



Our eight largest trade deficits for the month of December 2007 (and 2007 Year to Date) are as follows: China $18.792 Billion ($256.269 Billion YTD), Japan $6.593 Billion ($82.799 Billion YTD), Mexico $6.511 Billion ($74.258 Billion YTD), Canada $4.656 Billion, ($64.674 Billion YTD), Germany $3.874 Billion ($44.712 Billion YTD), Venezuela $3.651 Billion ($29.697 Billion YTD), Nigeria $3.431 Billion ($29.984 Billion YTD), and Saudi Arabia $2.704 Billion ($25.227 Billion YTD). Considering that our hands-down overall biggest dollar denominated imports are for crude oil and petroleum distillates, just WHAT all are we hocking our souls for in what we are getting from China, Japan, and Germany? As an aside… our biggest trade surpluses are with the Dutch with a December surplus of $1.513 Billion and a YTD surplus of $14.566 Billion.



The top eight sources of Uncle $ugar’s crude oil imports for December 2007 were: Canada (1.780 Million barrels per DAY--MBPD), Saudi Arabia (1.675 MBPD), Venezuela (1.246 MBPD), Mexico (1.234 MBPD), Nigeria (1.210 MBPD), Angola (0.439 MBPD), Iraq (0.378 MBPD), and Algeria (0.348 MBPD). Uncle $ugar’s top eight sources of total petroleum imports for April 2007 were: Canada (2.326 MILLION barrels per DAY--MBPD), Saudi Arabia (1.686 MBPD), Venezuela (1.382 MBPD), Mexico (1.322 MBPD), Nigeria (1.271 MBPD), Algeria (0.600 MBPD), Angola (0.439 MBPD) and Iraq (0.378 MBPD). The December import value of crude oil ($24.9 Billion) and the December import average price per barrel of crude oil ($82.76) were records. Despite all the December saber rattling between Washington and Caracas, Venezuela regained its historic slot as our overall number three energy provider. Mexican production/ sales to US/us continued to decline.



How we fare in 2008 should be reflected in the numbers presented to the public. In the recent past, such reporting has been spun, hyped, or even eliminated altogether. We stopped getting the M-3 money supply data last March and more economic reporting by Uncle $ugar is scheduled for elimination this March. The FED and the Administration have drawn their line in the water, seeing more liquidity as the solution - not the problem. The US citizenry is being treated like mushrooms; kept in the dark and fed PR (public relations). Correction: make that another two alphabetical letter acronym. I've been thinking about guns By Fred Cederholm

I’ve been thinking about guns. Actually I’ve been thinking about the Northern Illinois University shootings, reason and logic, legislation, twenty-seven words, profiling, and the NRA.


Last Thursday on St. Valentine’s Day, a deranged individual took five innocent lives and wounded sixteen others in a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University just ten miles east of my home. This horrific incident comes on the heels of the shooting-murder of a well-respected attorney in nearby Rockford as he cleared the snow in front of his home. THAT was preceded by a mass shooting of shoppers at a suburban mall near Chicago just weeks before these other recent killings. The NIU shooter took his own life, while the two (or more) other killers still remain at large.

You see last Saturday when I volunteered to register voters at the League of Women Voters’ booth as part of the Rochelle Business Expo, several of my local readers stopped by to comment about my recent columns. All hoped I would address the escalation of this senseless armed violence which has of late been the story on page one. This is NOT a column I particularly want to write because everyone has a personal opinion on the subject - it is a lose/ no win situation for me. These shootings are on everyone’s mind as well they well should be. Something must be done, but what?

While I personally have not owned a firearm, I don’t have a problem with those who own rifles for hunting and sport target practice. I also don’t have a problem with those who own handguns to protect their homes, families, and persons as long as they are properly vetted, licensed, and trained. I do have a big problem with the over-the-counter sales of assault, automatic, and semi- automatic weapons plus the unrestricted sales of armor piercing ammo to any civilian who desires to own/ possess them. Could someone please explain to me why a private individual would need (or even want) such weaponry? I’ve never understood the rationale behind this and am totally baffled.

In the coming months, there will be a renewed push to enact additional legislation that will try “to protect us from ourselves.” Most recently… there was the attempt to create gun free zones. This sounds good on paper, but is any criminal or deranged person going to honor it? The NIU campus was a gun free zone and just what (in hindsight) did that accomplish? Not much!



Once again we will see the twenty-seven words of the Second Amendment to the US Constitution dissected and debated. These are: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Just what was the intent of the framers, and how have the conditions/ logic behind such evolved or changed since 1791? Until repealed/ modified, the Second Amendment remains the law of the land.



Since 9-11, profiling – a segmenting of the population by certain demographic characteristics for investigative purposes – has gotten a bum rap. There are certain factors and characteristics which history has shown to be central to identification of perpetrators. Every horrific mass shooting (since Columbine) has involved persons who were identified with certain problems, had taken specific medications, or had stopped taking them. It all cases there were lapses in the availability of such information for the existing vetting process. The issue reduces to whether the right to privacy supersedes the protection or welfare of the general population. This presents no small dilemma!



The National Rifle Association is more than a well-funded gun lobby. It is fine organization that is really about safety, respect, and training. Their informational materials/ videos are excellent. As a private organization, membership by ALL gun owners cannot be required, but it should be highly recommended. I’m Fred Cederholm and I’ve been thinking. You should be thinking, too.

Many factors have contributed to the mess our economy is in right now. One has been the popular fantasy, encouraged by retailers, financial institutions and the mass media, that there is no reason why every American can't have it all, right now -- regardless of whether there is any basis for that assertion.

Now, though, attitudes are changing. The current downturn is forcing many of those who might once have blindly accepted the tenets of the cult of consumerism to have a serious rethink. In "Economy Fitful, Americans Start to Pay as They Go," the New York Times suggests the new, more prudent perspectives are also spawning what could be a far-reaching change in spending patterns.

"Here we are yet again in the midst of another 'global economic crisis'," says financial analyst, Nicholas Vardy, editor of The Global Guru. Vardy is not reporting, but mocking. For he is one of the establishment cheerleaders respected by Wall Street, and he does not look kindly upon those considered to be bears in today's world. There was a lot of castigation in his latest missive to us in the hinterland (2/5/08). So what I wish to do in this essay is investigate some of Vardy's derisive barbs and see how substantive they really are. His comments are in italics; my answers follow in regular font.

Before you liquidate your financial assets, buy gold bullion, and move to a cave in Montana, you may wish to consider that current predictions of global economic collapse may be simply hyperbole. It has happened before.

Yes, hyperbole accompanies all economic crises in history, most of which do not result in collapse. But the presence of hyperbole does not negate the disastrous policies that create the potential for a collapse. It is the policy sources of the potential collapse that we must investigate here, not the tenor of the voices exclaiming its coming.

Comparing economic statistics is inevitably a "glass is half empty" versus "glass is half full" kind of game. Both Pollyannas and Cassandras can marshal endless statistics to support their version of events.

U.S. Oblivious to Day of Reckoning

The United States is being drained of its economic wealth by Asian leaders, who dupe our politicians and Executive Branch officials and take advantage of our tree trade policies. The communist Chinese leaders, in particular, take offense at our superpower status and show hostility to our naval fleet in oceans that border their shores.

China does not have to fight a war to have the fleet go home. It is much easier and less costly to mislead and deceive our government officials into making decisions that destroy our wealth-producing manufacturing capacity. Cheap labor, visions of large markets, and greed for profits have seduced our transnational corporate managers and owners.

They outsource labor, capital, technology, research and development, manufacturing know-how, and trade secrets. They are dismantling our wealth-producing industries, and these owners and managers do not have loyalty or allegiance to th
Createe United States. As our economic strength declines, so will our Navy’s presence in the Pacific and our ability to defend our country.

The Chinese have already accomplished so much economic damage that it is both dangerous and frightening.

Thinking about developments By Fred Cederholm

I’ve been thinking about developments. Actually I’ve been thinking about 2007/2008, metropolitan Rochelle, location, Allstate, expansion(s), new construction(s), and the Hub City Business Expo. The national stories on page one hardly have been upbeat and inspiring. 2007 was not a year of good news and 2008 is already shaping up to be not much better. The chronicles of my weekly column have not been “a cheerful earful,” but I’ve been remiss on my local focus of events.



You see the late Chicago Real Estate mogul Arthur Rubloff said: “the three most important things are location, location, and location.” Location and prudent management/ planning/awareness make all the difference. Rochelle is known as the HUB City for good reason. There are five major road thoroughfares which connect Rochelle. Two major national railroads intersect the city. Global III - the world’s largest railway intermodal - is here. The third leg of RMU’s massive internet tele-communication’s triangle (Rochelle, Rockford, Chicago) was completed. President George Bush (a Republican) complimented Governor Rod Blagojevic (a Democrat) because Illinois fared so well in 2007, but Rochelle’s corner of Ogle County was the biggest business bright spot in the entire state!



Just two weeks ago ground was broken for Allstate Insurance’s, “the good hands’ people,” multi-MILLION dollar data facility as the anchor for Rochelle’s new Business and Technology Park. Allstate looked at 31 locations in 17 states and chose Rochelle. In good economic times, this would be great news. In this economic environment, this is PHENOMENAL news!!! But… there is more.



2007 saw the completion of Sara Lee Corporation’s 120,000 square foot expansion of their refrigerated/ freezer warehouse which doubled their storage/transfer capabilities. A 15,000 square foot office complex was also added to their facility in Rochelle.



Rochelle’s state-of-the-art ethanol production facility, Illinois River Energy, broke ground in August for their phase two expansion. It is on-schedule and on-budget for completion in April 2009.This will double their ethanol output from 50 MILLION gallons to 100 MILLION gallons.



Hormel Corporation’s Rochelle Foods Division completed their newest production line for their vacuum-sealed microwaveable entrees – ready to eat in just 90 seconds. (They are all good, but trust me, the pot roast, and spaghetti & meatballs ones are exceptional!) These require no refrigeration and have a shelf life of two years.



Pro Logis - the world’s largest owner, manager and developer of distribution facilities –signed on as a partner to Rochelle’s growing commercial development projects. The new strip mall on the old A-and-W drive-in site welcomed Family Video. The new Walgreen’s Store is going up on the former Rochelle High School site ,while the ground preparations continue for the new SUPER WalMart location on the Lincoln Highway. In my little hometown of nearby Creston, Contry Homes ( www.contryhomes.com ) just took out their eighteenth building permit for their new Creston Commons housing subdivision. This marks a record amount of new home construction for us here.




On Saturday February 16th from 10 AM to 4 PM, the Rochelle Area Chamber of Commerce will host their Annual Business Expo at the Rochelle Middle School. Admission is free. Parking is free. Approximately 40 local businesses will feature booths explaining their services and product offerings. There are many door-prizes given away and demonstrations presented. Local service organizations will offer food, beverages, and home baked goods. The League of Women Voters will provide voter registration services at the Chamber of Commerce Booth. You owe it to yourself to find out what all is happening in the HUB City. Bring your family… you’ll have a great time and you’ll learn plenty. I’m Fred Cederholm and I’ve been thinking. I came across your Amercian Chronicle article while doing a Google search for Bill Fleckenstein. I really enjoyed it. I'm including a copy of a letter I wrote about Social Security insolvency to Send Kent Conrad (which contained a letter I wrote to the Comptroller General of the U.S.). In the letter to Mr Walker (the Comptroller General), I included a copy of an "Updated Version" of the Declaration of Independence I wrote in 1985 for a college paper. I hope you enjoy it.

Dear Senator Conrad,
Your appearance with Senator Gregg on C.N.B.C. this week was unexpectedly refreshing. Normally when I see politicians from Washington talk about “Protecting” the future of Social Security & Medicaid/Medicare (without any real substantial changes to the program structures) and at the same time “Promise” that they hold the key to maintaining and improving America’s economic vitality, I want to stick an ice-pick in my ears.
You and Senator Gregg approached the subject of our impending financial disaster with: 1) courtesy & respect for one another, 2) a sober non-partisan grasp of the danger of inaction and 3) the strength of character to tell ALL American’s that this will not be easy but that the alternative to action is unthinkable. I wish there were more politicians like you in my home state – corruption and largess central – New Jersey
Included with this fax is a copy of a note regarding Our Future that I sent to the Comptroller General of the United States. Feel free to use it. I hope you enjoy it.
By the way, I am a lower-middle class 45 year old working man and my “Contribution” to the Solution to Social Security (and American) Insolvency is that I am willing to forgo ANY SOCIAL SECURITY benefits as long as I generate the equivalent of 100% of the Poverty Limit at my retirement age from my own Assets. If I make more than that on my own, NO BENEFITS TO ME. Make the program NEEDS BASED and adjust retirement ages for Modern Day Life Expectancies. Also, give my so called entitlement to a fellow elderly person who was not far-sighted enough or lucky enough to plan his or her own retirement.

Dear Mr. Walker
I heard about your reference to America resembling the waning days of the Roman Empire on C.N.B.C. a few weeks ago and then I read an account of your comments in David Panzner’s book “Financial Armageddon”. These prompted me to read your actual speeches and releases on the subject of our country’s precarious (and potentially depressing) future.
After reading your thoughtful apolitical analysis –which shows your love for and dedication to the United States- I (a lowly citizen and taxpayer) wanted to Thank You for your efforts at being a modern day Paul Revere. I only hope you can get the word out to as many people as possible, so they will make informed wise (not emotional 30 second sound bite motivated) decisions on who to elect to truly lead our country through the challenging difficult times we face.
In 1985 when the United States Senate was passing an increase in the federal debt limit (to $2 Trillion), I wrote an updated version to The Declaration of Independence to highlight the incredible dysfunction created by: 1) the malignant and obsolete organizational structure of the federal government; 2) the explicit and implicit corruption inducing electioneering system for federal officials and 3) a disinterested citizenry that has yet to experience the discomfort and explosion in taxation and inflation caused by short-sighted policies and inefficient governmental operations. This was originally part of a college paper and was designed to foster thoughtful discussion on the challenges facing the United States in the future.

Declaration of Independence – Part II

Monday, September 16th, 1985
When in the Course of Human Events, it becomes necessary for Individuals – and thus their commercial enterprises, charitable groups and local & state governments – to Dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with their national government and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and Superior Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation.
We hold the Truths to be Self-Evident, that All People are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain Unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty of the Spirit & Mind, Ownership of One’s Own Productive Efforts, Freedom from Intrusive governments, Economic Freedom of Choice, and the Pursuit of Happiness. MEMBERS of CONGRESS and PRESIDENTS (1933 to the Present):
-Have, with the best of intentions (and sometimes without), continually tried to Artificially manipulate the Economy of the United States. This manipulation – designed for the purposes of bringing about improved living standards, greater societal cohesiveness, and Domestic Tranquility – Resulted in: an unjustifiably High Level of Taxation, a Schizophrenically Paradoxical and Complicated Tax Code, Astronomically High Levels of Bankruptcy Threatening Government Debt, Increased Risk of Government Debt Monetazation Induced Debasement of the Purchasing Power of Our Dollar (INFLATION), Increasing Levels of Government Intrusion into the Lives of Our Citizens, Greater Amounts of Suspicion, Antagonism and resentment between members of different Socio-Economic Groups, and – MOST IMPORTANTLY – a Stagnation in the Evolution of Our Natural Socio-Economic Interactive Abilities. All this has been done by Federal Officials who, for the most part, have no stated or inferred CONSTITUTIONAL Authority to operate the Federal Government in such a fashion and who lack sufficient understanding of THE ECONOMIC LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE. These Financial/Economic – and resulting individual, family, societal, political and international relations- WEAKNESSES have left Our Union exposed to all the Dangers of Propagandistic Invasions from without, and Economic, Psychological and Societal Convulsions from Within;
-They have created a situation which has subjected Us to a jurisdiction foreign to: the Ideals, Intentions, and Goals that formed Our DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE; fueled the Fires of Our AMERICAN REVOLUTION, and are the very Essence of Our Nation’s Birth;
-They have diluted the strength & meaning of Our CONSTITUTION by passing thousands of obscure and complicated pieces of legislation; thus effectively abolishing Our Most Valuable LAWS, and altering fundamentally the form of Our Government from the WISE Designs of the Original Architects of the Government of the United States;
-They have unjustly declared themselves invested with the Power to legislate for Us in All cases whatsoever. Congress with its Inglorious Plethora of committees and sub-committees AND the Executive Branch with its innumerable departments, agencies, commissions, councils, services and offices, work together to actively “HELP” the People of the United States Live THEIR LIVES; the result of this Ungodly collaboration has been an unprecedented proliferation of laws, regulations, and taxes, which have combined to make it Mathematically Certain that even the most Honest Individuals, businesses and local governments amongst Us will break a good number of Federal Dictates;
-They have created a Multitude of new government agencies, commissions and departments and sent hither swarms of bureaucrats to Harass Us and TAX OUT OUR SUBSTANCE (using direct, indirect, regressive, progressive, income, excise, fuel, toll, property, inflation, marriage, and FUTURE FEDERAL DEBT REPAYMENT TAXES). Our alleged representatives have told Us that We must make do with Less Money because they WANT – without genuinely attempting to adapt the government to less revenue – MORE OF OUR MONEY; We are expected to accept – in a Slave-like Fashion – the unspoken fact that WE THE PEOPLE (the farmers, workers, savers, investors, teachers, entrepreneurs and consumers) of the United States serve one purpose relative to the Federal Government – TO PAY, Unquestioningly and Involuntarily, for the Services Provide to, the Aggravation Inflicted on, and the Economic Instability Forced upon Us by the Federal Government;
-They have – by using Socio-Economically Divisive Rhetoric, Simplistic and Vague Campaign Slogans and Speeches, Confusing & Equally Meaningless Statistics and by placing party politics and political gamesmanship ABOVE Our Nation’s True Current and Future Needs – incited the development of Factional Divisiveness with Our Society;
-They have created Oceans of DEBT which threaten to Drown the Happiness of Future Generations of Americans and with this DEBT, they have backed themselves into a Financial and Political corner – from which the only logical long-term escape (given their past Taxing, Financial, & Operational Performance Record) will be Higher Tax Extractions & Inflationary Debt Monetization. This monetization will bring forth a Tidal Wave of Inflation; and this Inflation will result in an Unrestrained and Indiscriminate Financial Genocide of the Value and Wealth contained in Our Paychecks, Bank Accounts, Insurance Policies, Stock and Bonds, Cash, & Government Debt Securities. Paper Money will – as it has in Our PAST – “Pollute the Equity of Our Laws, Turn them into Engines of Oppression, Corrupt the JUSTICE of Our Public Administration, Destroy the Fortunes of the Millions who have Confidence in it, Enervate the Trade, Husbandry, and Manufacturers of Our Country, and Will Go Far to DESTROY the MORALITY of OUR PEOPLE;”
-And they have – in general – behaved in a manner totally Unworthy of Solemnly Sworn Stewards of a GREAT & FREE ECONOMIC POWER.
This Documentable pattern of Knowingly & Wantonly Shattering the American Dreams of Individual Economic Self Determination and National Prosperity, for reasons of personal political ambition, financial greed, foolishness, and/or weakness of will power, CANNOT BE JUSTIFIED. And for their parts in this Historically Criminal Act, Members of Congress and Presidents (1933 to the Present) – whether active participants or passive acquiescers – WILL NOT BE FORGIVEN by the People of the United States or by the Posterity of the World.
In every stage of these increasing Economic Oppressions, we have PETITIONED FOR REDRESS in the most humble terms; Our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated Injury. A Federal Government, whose Character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is Unfit to Protect and Govern a FREE PEOPLE.

NOTE: I wrote this on the night of September 16th, 1985 as a way of venting my frustration with the fact that the U.S. Senate was raising the Federal Debt Limit to $2 TRILLION ($2,000,000,000,000.00). At the ripe old age of 22, I thought this event was a disaster (joke was on me haha). I haven’t read this in almost 20 years. Given our current economic and political situation, I think its content holds up pretty well. I hope you enjoyed it.
By the way, the Federal Debt Limit is being RAISED to $9.815 TRILLION ($9,815,000,000,000.00); That’s $32,716.66 for Each American, all 300,000,000 of us. Plus we as a Nation have a ZERO PERCENT SAVINGS RATE and We (America) are borrowing 800 BILLION a Year ($800,000,000,000.00 Per Year or $2,191,780,821.90 per day or $91,324,200.90 Per Hour or $1,522,070.02 Per Minute) From CHINA, O.P.E.C. Countries, RUSSIA, and everyone else we can hit up to finance our spending binge. PLUS, the U.S. Government has “OFF-BUDGET / IMPLICIT LIABILITIES of $38.8 TRILLION ($38,800,000,000,000.00) see GAO-08-241CG – that’s another $129,333.33 Per Person. NOW, Add that to your credit cards, car loans and mortgages and do you really think we’ll ever see a Social Security check that’s actually worth anything?

Power elite by Joost van Steenis

Dear reader, this is the 96th Letter of an Autonomous Thinker.
When you find a lot of money you have found the elite.
Often I have been asked to give names of elitepeople. But I think masspeople are sufficient autonomous to decide which eliteperson they want to pressurize.
I give only methods how to find elitepersons. Because the elite always wants to have more than the masses, look for the money and you find the elite.


Money allows the elite to distinguish itself from the masses. With money the elite has build a separate world that is closed to masspeople. Money is the ultimate and dominating reason why elitepeople want to have power.


POWER and MONEY are intertwined.
But while it is not always clear who has power, money can always been traced. Money is spend in special places and on special goods. A Ferrari or a big yaught cannot be bought by people who just work for a monthly salary. In five star hotels masspeople are only servants. A massperson can never get a ticket for the first row in a theatre when a premiere is on program.

You can also determine who belongs to the elite by using the Method of the Three F's. (see "Who belongs to the elite", http://members.chello.nl/jsteenis/letter57.htm). Elitepeople possess Finance (capital), Functions (to take important decisions) and Family (a network of trusted people).


I used this research method in "The elite is very old" ( http://members.chello.nl/jsteenis/letter58.htm) and "The growth of an elite" ( http://members.chello.nl/jsteenis/letter84.htm).
In the past I used this method to make a list of more than two hundred people who belong to the Dutch top elite. I published the result in "The Power of the Family-Capital and What to do About It" (1980). Alas only available in Dutch.



By following the money trail you can find elitepersons.
Then and only then you can decide what to do to make an end to the dominating positions of elitepersons, to the situation in which decisions favour in the first place the continuation of the safe and privileged position of a few humans at the cost of the position of the vast majority of humanity.
More money for a small group of already privileged people is the basic reason that many people do not have a decent life. Even when it costs near to nothing to eradicate measles, malaria or tuberculosis, the money is not available.
It is not going to happen that extreme poverty is eradicated in a few years.
On the contrary, the elite continues to channel vast amounts of money to itself.



And again, follow the money and you find the culprits.
Then and only then masspeople can undertake the right actions that make it impossible for the elite to continue the exclusive and safe life they lived for ages. And it is fairly easy to disturb situations that can only be bought by excessive money.

When the elite cannot live any more its privileged life, then and only then the road is opened towards a New World in which all people have equal status.

Tthinking about the Presidency By Fred Cederholm

I’ve been thinking about the Presidency. Actually I’ve been thinking about Super Tuesday, “the six,” messes, the US Dollar, banking, energy, debt, deficits, and choices. Tuesday February 5th, marks our first real “national” primary election when voters in 22 states cast their ballots/ caucus in the selection of candidates for the 2008 Presidential race. On the Demo side there are two choices and on the Repub side there are four. They want the office and are spending fortunes to get it, but the desire(s) leading their quest run the gamut – greed, power, ego, money, vision, a permanent place in history, agenda, service to self, and service to others. Why would anyone subject themselves to this?



You see there is more to being President than living in an incredibly historic home, having an army (literally and figuratively) at your beckon call, and traveling in a style unimagined by mere mortals. Also there are quirky titles of honor: “Mr.” President, Commander-in Chief, and Leader of the Free World. Our next President faces challenges, crises, and messes literally unseen since 1776. Our future, our way of life, and our Constitutional liberties are under assault like never before -THAT includes the darkest days of either the Great Depression of the 1930’s or those of WWII. Why would any rational (sane) individual want to assume such a huge leadership burden, because whoever wins this Election of 2008, loses… and they (with their families) will pay a huge price?



Since August 2007, the economy has surpassed the stagnating military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq as the hot button campaign issue of 2008. There is good reason for this. The US economy has been fluffed/ hyped beyond all rational recognition. Daily revelations of some new crisis are one by one undercutting the smoke, lights, and mirrors behind the illusion that all is well. Our mythical GDP (Gross Domestic Product) has at its core increased consumption, not increased production. The “real growth” has been triggered by cheap money, plastic money, increased debt, and the illusory paper profits from bubbles. All seems fine only as long as minimum payments are being made and foreign $ugar daddies continue their willingness to hold the US debt and continue to assume more!



The weakening US Dollar continues its hegemony as the world’s reserve currency only because no other currency is “big” enough to replace it. Besides… what is truly gained merely by substituting one fiat (debt based) currency with another? Cutting interest rates to promote more debt is no solution to a solvency based problem. This only weakens the US Dollar and makes it less desirable to hold as a store of value. Which of “the six” candidates holds the answer/ solution?



The worldwide financial network is tottering on the brink of collapse. What is the real value of what they hold, or continue to market, as “assets?” Investment banks and financial advisors have sold a bill of goods that is unraveling before our very eyes. With hats in hand, they now go begging for bailout capital in the Middle and Far East - not to fix problems mind you, but merely to buy more time before the ultimate day of reckoning. Which of “the six” candidates holds the answer/ solution?



Our debt/ deficits now project themselves out into infinity. This will continue (and escalate) as long as we as a nation buy more than we sell in the global markets, depend on ever increasingly costly imported energy to fuel our toys and our economy, and pursue a profligate and bellicose foreign policy to police the entire planet. Which of “the six” candidates holds the answer/ solution?



The Tuesday primaries are about change AND choice. But… change for change alone is no solution. Have candidates even identified the problems, much less addressed them in plans? They all claim to have “ideas,” but what are they? Talk and clichés are cheap! Which of “the six” candidates holds the answer/solution? I’m Fred Cederholm and I’ve been thinking.
